Stimming

The general area that I’ve been addressing in the studio over the last couple of years has been the eternal vulnerability of documents and cultural information. We live in an age of false news, conspiracy theories, the reckless disposal of valuable material and a general awareness that previously trusted platforms can no longer be relied upon to present accurate facts. I started thinking more deeply about historical aspects of this when I read Irene Vallejo’s book Papyrus: The Invention of Books in the Ancient World.

These are paintings about erasure, palimpsests, cultural loss and the human impulse to reconfigure reality.

Hard Work

Woolloongabba Art Gallery presents “HARD WORK”, an exhibition of new work by Dominic Reidy and Jack Rodgers. Rodgers paints portraits of fishermen from photographs found on the walls of his local fishmonger. These paintings are a celebration of his family’s trips to the ‘fisho’ and a satirical poke at tanlines, beer guts and Aussie male past times. Reidy is similarly interested in the rituals associated with an 'Aussie' identity. His small sculptures aim to document and question the way dominant masculinity is presented and performed in a culture where seemingly meaningless rites of passage take place around blowmould altars.
